ROBERT CAHEN Passaggi Videoinstallazioni 1979-2008
Protagonist of the European and international video-art, Robert Cahen has been not only a pioneer of the research through the electronic image, wrestling with the French TV studios instruments thanks to his experience as a composer of concrete music. He has been a beginner of styles and genres, he has opened the way to the “documentary of creation”, he has been able to marry the rigorous artistic research with the cultural dialogue with institutions, TV commissions.
Musicians, photographer, cinematographer, video-artist, he realized works about dance and music, theatre and art; he has worked through the film (from super 8 to 35 mm) and the electronic image, video and video-installations. He’s a master in representing landscape, urban space, journey; he has been awarded all over the world, broadcasted by several TV, he’s now receiving tributes, retrospectives, cultural initiatives, stages and workshops. His work which entwines with other arts (first of all music and painting) presents a core of deep consideration around the image of the time: both from a perceptive and figurative point of view, both as time of vision and as time of life. Fugacity and stasis, movement and immobility, fluidity and impregnability of existence, transit, landscape, are the heart of his artistic activity and of his poetic construction through images and sounds which finds its essentiality both in his installations and in his video-works.
Cahen, so sparing with the use of word, is one of the few artists who can “speak” also to a common public, because his abstractions never forget the reality and his evocations never forget the pleasure of sharing a story: even if only the story of a glance.
The exhibition at the Fondazione Ragghianti (Oct. 23 2009 – Jan. 10 2010) is the widest exhibition of video-installations of the author in Italy. It presents 13 works from 1979 to 2008: 11 installations and 2 videos (these 2 are shown at the exhibit as works “installed” for the occasion). The journey, the contemplation of the landscape, the metamorphosis of the glance; but also a slow and meditative time, the thought about the idea of landscape; the time of the life, the memory, the meeting with the other.
