Ribbed
pear-shaped coffee pot with polychrome decoration portraying European
flowers and the coat of arms of Cardinal Luigi Torrigiani. The lid
is dome-shaped, and likewise displays ribwork. The spout is shaped
into a snake's head, without rounded pouring orifice; the ear-shaped
handle is elaborately wrought and heavy.
It presents a gray-paste body with numerous firing imperfections
and rather oily lead-glazing. The decorative motif displayed on
one side of the coffee pot represents three large blossoming sprays
bearing European flowers (an eye-catching rose, anemone, poppy and
campanula); the shoots spring from the base and extend upwards,
tapering to slender sprigs towards the top.
The
other side features the coat of arms of Cardinal Torrigiani, which
however has numerous imperfections due to firing defects. The table
service created for Cardinal Torrigiani, who was ennobled with the
red hat in 1753, and for Cardinal Gianfranco Stoppani, delivered
on December 1st 1753, are known as "the Cardinals' services"
and represent one of the high points of the decorative motif known
as "deutsche Blumen", executed here with great freedom
and freshness of touch.
The
base, the point of attachment of the spout and the handle, the bridge,
the lid and the finial are bejewelled with a delicate gold fillet.
The shape echoes that of silver coffee pots, in particular those
from Genoa and Venice. [AB]
